Welcome to the MyIGN Metacritic Prediction League

It is finally here! Inspired by the work of some fine folks over at the VGChartz forums, welcome to the first annual (hopefully) MyIGN Metacritic Prediction League! Test your skills against your fellow MyIGNers in predicting the review scores for each of the 32 selected games coming out in 2014!

The MyIGN MPL in 5 Sentences

  • Predict in the comments below what review scores each of the 32 games listed will receive.
  • Every month, review scores will be collected from Metacritic.com for each game.
  • Users will receive points depending on how close their predictions are to the actual score.
  • Score updates and leaderboards will be posted on the 15th of every month.
  • The user with the highest score at the end of the year wins!

How to Sign Up

To sign up, comment below with your review score predictions for this year’s games. Feel free to make predictions on as many games as you want, but keep in mind you only get points for the games you make a prediction for. Sign-ups end on June 30th at 11:59 pm PST, and you can edit your predictions until then.

I have posted a sample prediction in the comments. If you want to be notified of each monthly update, tell me in the comments as well!

Full MyIGN MPL FAQ

How do I sign up?

Sign up instructions are at the top of this post. All you need to do is write a comment below with your review score predictions for each game.

Where are review scores collected from?

Review scores are collected from Metacritic.com.

Can I sign up after June 30th?

Yes, but you will only be able to make predictions for games that are not “locked” (see below).

What is a “locked” game?

A game is “locked” if a Metascore already exists for that game. This is to prevent newcomers from cheating by peaking at games already released in other regions before the monthly update.

Can I edit my predictions after I sign up?

Yes, but only for games that are not “locked.”

I signed up. What now?

Nothing. All you have to do is wait and watch your score fly (or fall flat)!

How do I get points?

5 points are awarded for guessing the correct Metascore. 3 points are awarded if you are off by a Metascore of 1, 2 points if you are off by 2, and 1 point if you are off by 3. You will not receive any points for Metascore predictions off by more than 3.

Do I have to make a prediction for every game?

No, but you will only receive points for the games you have predicted. Besides, why would you not make a prediction for every game? Just throw some random numbers in there!

How do I find out my current score?

Score updates for the previous month will be posted on the 15th of the following month.

Can you notify me whenever you post a score update?

Yes! Just tell me in the comments or on my wall.

Why are there different sections for Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, and multiplatform releases?

There will be separate leaderboards for each platform. Aside from that, it just helps me organize the league better.

How are multiplatform titles scored?

For games released on multiple platforms, the rounded average of the Metascores for each platform will be used in the score update.

When does the MPL end?

The MPL covers all games released through December of this year, with the final score update posted on January 15th.

What happens if a game is delayed past December?

If a game is delayed past the MPL period, it will be removed from the league and no one will receive points for that game.

What happens if a game is released in one region before it is released in another?

If a game releases in one region but not another, it will remain “locked” until it does. If a game is still locked by the final update and has not yet been released in all territories, then whatever the Metascore the game receives prior to the final update will be used in the final update.

Why not include games released between January and June?

Game companies have a nasty habit of announcing games in the middle of the year, particularly around E3. Thus, beginning the MPL in January would just be inconvenient and would likely conflict with my personal schedule anyways.

Do I get anything if I win?

Aside from bragging rights, maybe. The point of the MPL is to have fun, but prizes are not necessarily off the drawing board.

MPL Timeline (present – July 31st)

June 15th-30th – Sign-up window for the July update.

July 10th – Metascores will be collected for games locked in June*.

July 15th – Scores for June will be posted.

July 15th-31st – Sign-up window for the August update.

*Scores for locked games to be released in other regions later will not be collected.

Good luck to all participants! The first update will take place on July 15th. Naturally, since scoring does not begin until after June, no one will be awarded any points in the first update.
